Conventional modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are subjected to large capacitor voltage ripples at low-line-frequencies implying large passives size. This paper presents medium-voltage modular, scalable converter based on the 10kV SiC MOSFETs with ability to operate in both dc-dc and dc-ac mode, meanwhile having much lower capacitor values and ripples. Designed converter can operate in switching cycle control (SCC) and integrated capacitor-blocked transistor (ICBT) control modes, both able to balance capacitor voltages within switching cycle, greatly increasing converter power density. Designed power cell, dc-bus, control approach, communication strategy will be presented in detail. Afterwards, test results will be provided with the custom-build 12 kV SiC-based modular, scalable prototype. Additionally, critical performance parameters such as voltage balancing, efficiency and THD are compared between SCC and ICBT.
