The construction of the Internal European Market (IEM) for electricity has gone through the process of advancing in phases from individual national market to a large-scale regional market which coupling 23 members energy market and initially formed a power trading platform to optimally allocate the energy resources in a large scale. The development experience of the EU unified electricity market has significant implications for the establishment of the inter-provincial electricity spot market in China. Therefore, this paper compares the similarities and differences of the two markets and digs the reasons behind the differences in market designs to better support the development of the Chinese energy market.
