This paper investigates the impact of blockchain technology on the supermarket (retal industry) in NZ from a technological and functional perspective. This research employs secondary research methods including desktop research, literature review and case studies. Blockchain technology affects the business process of supermarkets mainly by securing payments and provides an end-to-end supply chain that improves food security. However, this process is hampered bu a number of challenges including difficulty in adapting sound logistics, lack of adequate skills and resistance to change by employees. This can be addressed by imparting education/training and raising the awareness about the benefits of blockchain.
