In recent years the social responsibility initiatives have gained a growing role, becoming a focal activity for a large number of commercial and industrial companies. Several of these initiatives are addressed toward the support to the energy needs of the villages where the rural economy is prevailing. The strength and weakness of these activities realized in the field of rural energies are here examined. The study discusses the status of the Research & Development on the matter and takes into account the capability of local energies to support the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
