Luoma lake is the fourth largest lake on Jiangsu Provice as well as the hub of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. With a widen sight, the lake is magnificent. Lakes are the carrier of regional water cycle and play the role of regional ecosystem. Human activities and natural factors greatly affect the expansion and contraction of the waters. Monitoring the area of water can provide a scientific basis for the local development. Compared with traditional optical remote sensing monitoring the area of water, all day, all-weather and high-resolution SAR images are playing a great role. SAR image interpretation using active contour model segmentation technique is an innovative method for measuring the area of water.
