The attractiveness of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is the flexibility that this new infrastructure brings to the deployment of new and novel multimedia applications. To date, IMS has been used for live, session-oriented communications. This paper observes that the basic principles organizing the IMS extend naturally to other important application architectures and that the use of the common IMS enablers between conversational sessions and store-and-forward messaging will spawn a new generation of blended services.
