In this paper we present a novel monitoring methodology: DUMS, a dynamical updatable monitoring system for desktop PCs which will be used for distributed computing. In DUMS, monitoring items can be changed at any time without redeveloping the whole system. Basing on a large amount of samples collected by DUMS, we characterize the workloads of office computers.
