A new kind of metamaterial whose unit cell consists of gold rod pairs standing on gold plate is introduced in this paper. Electromagnetic parameters are extracted from the scattering (S) parameters for one unit cell, from which we obtain a negative permeability μ=-0.33 at 4.9 THz. Two wedges of different angles (about 18.4° and 26.6°) are designed to give direct evidence of negative refraction in this structure. We also investigate the dependence of resonance frequency on the dimension parameters of this structure.
