A reliable ultrasonic localization method is proposed to address the problem of determining the location of partial discharge sources in converter transformers. By detecting the faulty converter transformer, the fault location of the converter transformer is predicted. After the disassembly and inspection of the converter transformer, the reliability of the localization method in detecting the partial discharge location of the UHV converter transformer is demonstrated. The electric field analysis of the fault region reveals that the electric field intensity at the fault position is larger than other positions. The maximum electric field intensity reaches 3.2 kV/mm. and the equivalent circuit analysis of the partial discharge process at the fault location is carried out to propose the transmission process of the local discharge signal. The results show that the method can be effectively applied to the detection of local discharges in UHV converters. This method realizes the accurate localization of partial discharges and provides a reliable method for the detection and localization of local discharge signals inside converters.
