Hybrid electric vehicles come with the requirements to coordinate power sharing amongst the sources using the energy management system (EMS). This work investigates the effectiveness of frequency rule-based EMS on hybrid freight locomotive. Energetic macroscopic representation (EMR) and MATLAB/Simulink are used to control, represent and simulate interactions and power transfer of the system. The results show the filtering method is efficient in the coordination of power sharing amongst sources, managing the usage of regenerated power as well as ensuring the battery charge is sustained within limits.
