Electromagnetic fields are increasingly being applied in biomedical research to restore neuronal structures. The RISEUP project, funded by FET Open under Horizon Europe 2020, aims to utilize microsecond pulsed electric fields for the treatment of Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI). By leveraging cell membrane electroporation, the proj ect seeks to regenerate the injured spinal cord through a novel device. This device employs high-intensity microsecond pulsed electric fields to stimulate stem cells differentiation towards neuronal phenotypes. Advanced computational modeling plays a crucial role in facilitating device design, replication of observed effects, and further exploration. It enables the assessment of microdosimetry and functional response of cells, serving as a versatile tool for reproducing in vitro and in vivo experiments and enhancing our understanding of underlying mechanisms.
