To begin this book, we would like to take a moment to explain how and why it was written. At the time work began the COVID-19 pandemic was sweeping the globe. We were locked in our homes and the only social interaction outside of our immediate ‘“bubbles’” were via a multitude of social media and telecommunication platforms. The onset of the initial lockdown was declared as one of the authors was packing the final items into his suitcase for a family holiday. Over the coming weeks, as the anxiety of what laid ahead took a grip of the nation, we began to discuss more often about past holidays and adventures.Around this same time, one of the authors, as they perused the immense Netflix library to pass time, stumbled upon a series titled Dark Tourist (2018). The series, hosted by New Zealand journalist and actor David Farrier, covered a wide range of locations and topics including Pablo Escobar, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, a tour based on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, voodoo rituals and last but not least a tour of the Manson family murders. The author, as is a well-known habit with most television shows on Netflix, binged the entire series in a matter of days. The author, excited and intrigued by what was displayed, rang the other two authors with an idea: why don’t we write a book that further explores some of the themes presented on the show? And what if we were to explore other, less discussed themes and topics within the context of dark tourism?
