Brže su prepoznate i proizvedene i djeca urednog razvoja ih brže usvajaju, a djeca s fonološkim kašnjenjem brže usvajaju riječi s rijetkim glasovnim nizovima.
Main aim of this masters`s thesis is to present connection between phonological and lexical development. First part briefly adresses phonological and lexical development and after that we focus on various ways the two interwine. For the most part their relationship will be shown through phonological (phonotactic probability) and lexical variables (neighborhood density and word freuqency). Thesis also presents effects these variables have on word perception, word production as well as word acquisition. Numerous reviews of scientific literature have shown that exact direction of connection between phonological and lexical development can not be determined because their reciprocal influence has been present from early age. Children from early age manifest preferences for certain phonological patterns and consequently have an easier time learning words that follow such patterns. Word acquisition can strenghten language phonotactics which leads to bigger influence of certain phonological characteristics on word learning. Likewise, the afformentioned increase in influence of phonological characteristics leads to more efficient word learning and increase in child`s receptive vocabulary. Regarding phonological and lexical variables, processing of frequent words is faster and more accurate relative to infrequent words and so they are learned sooner. Words from sparse neighborhoods are in advantage compared to the words from dense neighbborhoods when being processed due to less inhibitio. Novel words from dense neighborhoods will be learned sooner than novel words from sparse neighborhoods which indicates that organization of existing lexical representations affects creation and integration of new representations. Across the lifespan words composed of common sound sequences are recognized and produced more rapidly than words composed of rare sound sequences. Children with typical phonological development tend to learn more rapidly words composed of common sound sequences. On the other hand chidren with delayed phonological develompment will learn more rapidly words composed of rare sound sequences. This thesis presents several important clinical implications. It emphasises the influence that lexical variables of targeted words have on sounds learning and their generalization in treatment for children with phonological delays. Treatment for this children should include frequent words in language as well as words from sparse neighborhoods and avoide words from dense neighborhoods. On the other hand, children with specific language impairment appear to exhibit delays in lexical acquisition. In such cases phonological variables could help with the diagnosis and treatment due to their effect on lexical acquisition.
