In the recent past, screen time has been targeted as having a potential relationship to increased levels of anxiety and depression in adolescents. However, given the social changes encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic, we hypothesize that use of screen media, in particular screen media used for social engagement, provides a vital way for adolescents to connect with their friends and peers. In this case, higher use of socially-focused screen media could relate to decreased anxiety and increased feelings of support during a period of reduced in-person socializing. Furthermore, higher socially-focused screen use may relate to more stable social connections over the course of the study.
