Parental stress is associated with greater risk of child maltreatment, including higher rates of harsh discipline or neglectful behavior. COVID-19 and the associated public response is likely to put stress and strain on parents and caregivers. Further, the current practices of school closure and social distancing are likely to minimize opportunities for surveillance of these behaviors and reporting to formal child protective service systems (e.g., by school personnel), minimizing opportunity to study these effects via administrative data sources. Our study examines rate of exposure to COVID-19 stressors and its association with parenting stress and economic strain, as well as effects on parents’ use of harsh discipline or neglectful behaviors with their children.
