Highlights •Seasonal variations and species successions of floating Ulva species happened in the early stage of the macroalgal blooms.•Morphological differences in the four free-floating Ulva species in the Yellow Sea were described in detail.•The ecological tolerance of U. prolifera enabled it to grow faster than other Ulva species and become the dominant species.
