Highlights •CoS2 in-situ loading and S doping for g-C3N4 are synchronously constructed.•Partial N atoms in g-C3N4 are replaced by S atoms.•CoS2 nanosheets as H2-evolution cocatalysts in-situ grow on the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheets.•Co-S bonding between CoS2 and S-doped g-C3N4 enhances directed transfer of photo-generated electrons.•The noble-metal-free photocatalytic H2-evolution activity of g-C3N4 is effectively elevated.
