Highlights •Synergistic DES-hydrogenolysis pretreatment exhibited excellent performance.•MA-EG synergistically promoted the lignin removal and preserved the structure.•Less-condensed lignin similar to MWL and high-purity cellulose were obtained.•Cellulose purity > 94%, >98% and 97% lignin and xylan were removed.•The recovered DES had good recyclability.
