Highlights •The pre-dehydration of woody biomass with sulfuric acid (4.6–32 wt%) was studied.•The pre-dehydrated biomass samples were carbonized for the production of biochar.•Biochar yield and carbon retention rose by greater than 10% if pre-treated at room temperature.•Pre-treatment at 90 °C doubled the biochar yield and carbon retention.
