Highlights •A novel continuous microwave assisted pyrolysis system designed to produce syngas.•Gas product is of higher yields and quality than from conventional pyrolysis.•Tars reduced from 7.83 g/Nm3 to below detection limit by physical removal means.•7.2 MJ electrical energy/kg wood consumed to obtain a cold gas efficiency of 73.3%•Potential improvements allow a net electricity generation from the process.
