Highlights •The function of MAPTMS modified PCE (SC-PCE) and the side reaction in synthesis process were studied.•SC-PCE can reduce SF agglomeration in CH and improve fluidity and mechanical strength of cement / SF composites.•Combined effects of free radical co-polymerization and polycondensation made SC-PCE gel with high MAPTMS content.•Optimal MAPTMS dosage was proposed as a guide for the synthesis of SC-PCE.
