Highlights •A two-cohort population sample was examined longitudinally and cross-sectionally.•8395 preschool-aged children were examined at Grade 3 and 4332 at Grades 3, 5, 7.•Lower national test scores for reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and numeracy were achieved by children with parental speech and language concern.•Higher scores were achieved by children with typical speech and language status.•The same pattern of growth in literacy and numeracy was observed for both groups.
