Highlights •A highly stable active nanofluid that could withstand high salinity (API brine) and elevated temperature was prepared.•The impacts of surfactant carbon chain length, permeability, and hydrochloric acid were systematically studied.•The effects of IFT reduction and wettability alteration on spontaneous imbibition recovery were compared.•The underlying EOR mechanisms were thoroughly investigated.•Future work worthy of further research was highlighted.
