The author discusses research within the issue by R. Bliem et al. using surface-sensitive electron diffraction and scanning probe microscopy (STM) with first-principles modeling to establish a detailed atomic structure of the surface of the (001)-oriented crystal face of the iron oxide magnetite (Fe3O4). Conductivity at the interface of two oxide insulators, strontium titanate (SrTiO3) and lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3), is also discussed.
