The article looks at a report from within the issue by El-Kady and colleagues on a method for the synthesis of electrochemical capacitors (ECs) with laser-deposited graphene electrodes. Topics include the value of the specific energy metric for the evaluation of energy storage devices, the cost per unit of energy for various types pf capacitors, and the reversibility of the stored energy cycle. Also discussed is the potential for using this technology in the development of "smart" fabric ECs with piezoelectric transducers for flexible electronic applications.
