The article discusses a study on the effectiveness of the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) lansoprazole in asthmatic children without symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (GER). The Study of Acid Reflux in Children With Asthma was a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial in the U.S. that treated children with poor asthma control with either lansoprazole or placebo. More respiratory infections or adverse events were observed in children who received lansoprazole under the study. Children with poorly controlled asthma without GER symptoms and using inhaled corticosteriod showed no improvements in symptoms and lung function.
