Part of a special issue on assessment strategies in elementary science. For the past five years, the Science Resource Center staff of Mesa's public schools in Arizona have been working to improve science assessment in the district program. Teams led by a science resource teacher have developed and field-tested new units and/or revised old units. After each unit was developed, a designated assessment team completed the unit with students to see if the activities were successful and to determine if the individual assessment contributed toward an understanding of the unit goal. The district developed the End of Study Assessment Options to provide a range of evaluation measures. They also asked teachers to develop their own assessment measures. Finally, the school district is educating parents and interested community members about current national science education reform efforts.
