College and university nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have become a force to be reckoned with in environmental protection. In China's northwest, however due to economic backwardness and serious deterioration in the state of the environment, the development of college and university NGOs is far from meeting the needs of local environmental protection. The Lanzhou University Green Team and the Green Camel Bell — two of the university and college environmental NGOs that exist within the borders of Gansu province in China's northwest — have played a leading role in local environmental protection and environmental education. It is hoped that college and university NGOs will in future grow vigorously and healthily as a result of such measures as government support, funding guarantees, and improvements in their internal organization and that they will contribute their efforts to local environmental protection undertakings.
