Although literature on the design of housing for older adults frequently cites design recommendations for reducing the risk of falling, these recommendations are rarely supported by empirical research. Instead, the majority of the recommendations are based on opinion or case study reporting. Further research to evaluate design recommendations and the conflicting results of home modifications needs to be conducted. This research must take into consideration the multifaceted nature of falling, as well the fact that aging makes older adults less able to negotiate their physical environment safely.
