Suggestions for teachers on how to identify and eliminate communication-related problem behavior among students are provided. Students, particularly those with mental retardation, learning disabilities, or attention deficit disorder, may not understand an instruction, may not attend to or process the contents of an instruction, or may act on instructions intended for others. In order to ascertain if behavior problems result from misunderstandings in communication, teachers should assess students' language skills through formal assessments and classroom observations. In the case of the nonverbal student, a simple test called the Assessment of Basic Learning Abilities allows teachers to diagnose whether students have difficulty attending to visual and auditory cues necessary for problem-solving.
