The article presents a study on the methods used in language-specific phonetic settings. It states that the study is crucial since it can help in characterizing an individual speaker, therefore, creating a standard in identifying a language or a personality style. It says that there are few studies that support language-specific phonetic settings, which could be the result of inadequate phonetic instrumentation and inter-speaker variability. Several articulatory techniques in evaluating phonetic settings are discussed including electropalatography, ultrasound tongue imaging, and flesh-point tracking. It notes that acoustic techniques in determining the basis of phonetic settings have their disadvantages which include being costly, time consuming, and misleading for new researchers.
