The article focuses on a research about the evolution of the prion concept as well as the process through which prion-like mechanisms apply to other protein aggregation diseases. It also describes the clinical and pathological characteristics of the prion diseases which also called the transmissible spongiform encelopathies (TSEs) in humans and animals. Moreover, several progress in prion diagnostics including molecular diagnosis are discussed.
