The article discusses a prospective observational study which evaluates the evolution of cytokines in mechanically ventilated patients as well as their predictive and diagnostic role for ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in Spain. The study focused on mechanically ventilated patients in a medical intensive care unit (ICU). It found that interleukin (IL)-6 is accurate in discriminating patients with VAP from other causes of pulmonary infiltrates.
