The article focuses on the intermolecular contact-tuned magnetic nature in one-dimensional (1D) structures from a metamagnet to a single-chain magnet (SCMs). SCMs show slow magnetic relaxation coming from the combined effects of interchain magnetic interactions and single-ion anisotropy. It notes that the SCM characteristic can be attained with the condition of negligible interchain magnetic interactions. The syntheses, structures, and magnetic characterizations of 1D chains are presented.
