The article discusses a study that explored the potential use of serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) as a biomarker for small fiber neuropathy (SFN). The study compared the serum NfL levels of 30 SFN patients with those of 19 healthy individuals and found no significant difference between the two groups. However, the authors did observe a negative correlation between sural sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) and serum NfL in the patient group. The article also highlights the challenges of using NfL as a biomarker for peripheral nerve diseases and suggests that other neurofilament proteins, such as peripherin (PRPH), may be more suitable biomarkers for SFN. The authors also propose considering factors like body mass index (BMI) as potential confounding factors in NfL analysis. [Extracted from the article]
