The authors discuss the need for a new diagnosis to expand research and treatment options for opioid use disorder (OUD). Topics include points that must be considered regarding unsuccessful efforts to cut down its corollary use for longer than intended in the context of long-term opioid therapy (LTOT), advantages of a new diagnosis for this scenario, and the need for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the indication for sublingual buprenorphine to this scenario.
