The deepest shaft to penetrate the tilted geode layer reaches 200 feet below the desert floor, and there is now evidence that the geode layer extended eastward to an elevation of approximately 100 feet vertically higher than the current outcrop. Carrillo and his extended family own and operate mining activities at the Las Choyas geode mine in Chihuahua, Mexico. Similar to the accidental discovery in 1960 of the Las Choyas geode deposit, cowboys employed by Richard were grazing cattle on this small hill when they found geode fragments on the ground.
