A novel double‐tube heat exchanger with staggered helical fins (DTHE‐SHF) is proposed. The mechanism of drag reduction and heat transfer enhancement was analyzed based on the theory of field synergy. Numerical simulations were conducted to study the thermal performance of the DTHE‐SHF. The effects of torsion angle and number of the SHF were investigated. The results indicated that, compared with the double tube heat exchanger with traditional straight helical fins (DTHE‐TSHF), the pressure drop of the DTHE‐SHF is reduced significantly, and the comprehensive performance of the DTHE‐SHF is improved by 10 %–30 %. The average synergy angle between the velocity field and the pressure field is optimized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
