The American College of Chest Physicians guidelines considered VHD and AF to include mitral stenosis and prosthetic heart valves ([3]). We believe that the title and abstract of Dawwas and colleagues' article may lead providers to believe that administering DOACs to patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis or who have had mitral valve procedures is safe, because these patients fit the common definition of valvular AF. The American College of Cardiology Clinical Expert Consensus Document Task Force defined nonvalvular AF as AF in the absence of rheumatic mitral stenosis, a mechanical or bioprosthetic heart valve, or mitral valve repair ([2]).
