In this article I explore my contribution to the educational research landscape. The overarching narrative of my work focusses on exploring the complex link between school leadership and student learning with the ultimate aim of improving learning outcomes for students. My research sits on a foundation of many years as a teacher and senior leader in schools. I specifically discuss two aspects of my current research. Leading effective professional learning in schools is the first area of focus. My research in this area investigates the specific characteristics of professional learning which sustains improvement in teaching practices. I have published a model of professional learning which can be used by school leaders and individual teachers to plan, monitor and evaluate professional learning. The second aspect of my research focus is on identifying a model of change to support middle leaders as key personnel to lead improvement in teaching practice in secondary schools. In recent years there has been an increased recognition on the importance of middle leadership, and my research will add to this body of knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
