The article presents a technical analysis of paintings by the 17th century Dutch artist Frans Hals. It explores five of the many non-destructive techniques that provide a benchmark for a technical understanding of his paintings. The painter's working methods and materials used to make his art works are discussed, as well as the role of traditional connoisseurship in the field of Old Master paintings.
