The article focuses on research into methods of detecting foundation-scouring in bridges early enough to prevent bridge failure. It states professor Ken Loh developed flexible rods that measure erosion in rivers through undulation of the exposed portion of the rod which is converted into electricity through piezoelectric polymers. It mentions professor Genda Chen's proposal to magnetic artificial bounders in the river which will settle in dips and can be detected by measuring the magnetic field.
