Peer support is social support provided by a peer. Peer support occurs when peers provide knowledge, experience, emotional, social, and practical help to each other. In the context of diabetes, peer support is support from someone with diabetes who uses his/her experience managing his/her disease to teach and encourage others who are not doing well in managing their disease. This study explored the experiences of African Americans who attended a support program for people living with type 2 diabetes. The results of this study may create the need for peer support program planners to be aware of the different types of support that the peer supporters can provide and therefore ensure that the kind of support provided at each time will benefit the support recipients.
