A case study of a 19-year-old second semester female sophomore enrolled in a large Southeastern university who was undecided about choosing a major is provided. This case study includes a description of the student and her career problems; a description of the university's three-hour credit course in career development; an examination of the student's career situation from the perspective of Holland's typological theory and cognitive information processing theory; a description of the use of such theory-based interventions as the Self-Directed Search, the Career Thoughts Inventory, and the workbook Improving Your Career Thoughts: A Workbook for the Career Thoughts Inventory; a description of the preliminary outcomes of the career interventions used with the student; and a discussion of the practical implications for other counselors and career services providers.
