A condensed reprint of the article "Mainstreaming ELLs into Grade-Level Classes" by Elizabeth Varela, which appeared in the Spring 2010 issue of "Teaching Tolerance," is presented. The article discusses the effect of the U.S. education reform No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) on teacher accountability and student readiness for mainstream content classes in English language learning (ELL) programs. The article also discusses the sheltered instruction observation protocol (SIOP) for ELL instruction.
