Prior research has found that helplines are an effective way to offer low-cost and convenient assistance for a variety of different issues and situations. Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana (PCAL) administers a parenting helpline designed to provide varied resources in child-related matters to parents and other residents of the State of Louisiana. This study was undertaken to determine the demographic characteristics of areas from which high volumes of calls were received by PCAL's helpline in an attempt to assist the agency with its outreach efforts. Call data were collected for a period of approximately 21 months, during which time all calls to the helpline were logged and information such as the call's parish (county) of origin was recorded. An analysis of variance was conducted to determine significant differences in parishes that received no calls, inconsistent calls, and consistent calls. The demographic factors found to be related to higher call volume included higher population density, higher per capita income, and higher education levels. However, other factors likely are at play in determining helpline use as some high-density areas produced few calls and vice versa. Further research should examine agency presence, resources and current outreach efforts. Understanding such variables can potentially assist PCAL and other similar agencies focused on providing cost-efficient and effective resources such as parenting helplines to make the best and most informed decisions regarding resource distribution.
