Part of a special issue on strengthening gerontology and geriatrics education through faculty development. Two training programs that address the dearth of geriatric social work faculty in the classroom and the field are described. The Hunter/Mount Sinai Geriatric Education Center targets ten different health care disciplines for geriatric/gerontology training, one of which is social work. In a 57-hour certificate program, the center prepares social work registrants to work with older adults and to communicate their new knowledge and skills to others. The second program, Enhancing Faculty Leadership in a Multicultural Society, aims to attract and train minority health and social service professionals to work with older adults. The barriers and obstacles to implementing these programs are related to recruitment, structure, commitment, and power and the political climate. Guidelines for establishing faculty development programs in social work are presented.
