The article presents the authors' views on the importance of improving young people's access to books to improve reading and academic achievements. They argue that most children from minority groups do not have access to books which widen the gap between low-income and middle-income students. Also discussed are several ways to improve access to books which include allowing students to bring books from the library home during the school break.
