The authors discuss a project-based learning (PBL) unit on solid waste management developed for fifth and sixth graders, which focused on the effects of solid waste on local communities. The curriculum framework for the unit and the study of recycling are discussed, as well as mathematical models for calculating trash accumulation. The development of the unit into a service-learning project and students' use of graphs for data visualization are also mentioned.
