The goal of the Phase II effort was to design and develop the hardware, procedures and methodology for achieving Gen-IV Very High Temperature Reactor prototypical irradiation conditions for testing the accuracy and durability of advanced fiber optic instrumentation under development by Luna and DOE. During Phase I, Luna investigated several research reactors and concluded that the MITR facility is the most viable facility for generating prototypical Gen-IV irradiation for testing sensors. Luna demonstrated durability of fiber optic temperature sensors to be greater than 500 hours at 1000 degrees Centigrade and also made measurements on previously irradiated sensors confirming no significant damage in the sensor fiber leads after 5.15 E18 data acquisition system temperatures up to 700 degrees Centigrade. During the Phase II effort, Luna constructed and calibrated a series of test sensors and assembled a data acquisition system for monitoring the sensors real-time.
